Aloe for everyday wellness

Aloe for everyday wellness

For generations, aloe vera has been known as a plant for skin. Even people who know nothing about plants always seem to recognise aloe, the cactus-like plant. It grows in hot, dry climates, so it is not surprising that it has thick leaves, but what many do not expect is that those thick leaves are fleshy and filled with a soft, clear gel. Aloe plants can often be spotted in a pot near the kitchen door or - in Gobelo’s case, growing in the corner of some of the gardens.

At some point in our lives, whenever we have experienced a small burn while cooking, spent too much time in the sun on a hot afternoon, or had dry or irritated skin on cold days, we have either known to use it or someone has recommended aloe vera. The relief is almost instant. That easy, direct use is probably why aloe has remained popular for so long.

Beyond being a quick remedy, aloe vera is known to be rich in vitamins, enzymes and antioxidants, and has long been used in traditional wellness practices. It is believed that in ancient Greece, Rome, Babylonia and China, it was used for skin conditions and was thought to prevent premature graying of hair and promote wound healing. These days, some people use small amounts of the inner gel in homemade juices, while others rely on it purely for topical use. What we appreciate most is that it is easy to grow and readily usable. You don’t need special tools or complicated knowledge to benefit from it. You just need the plant.

Another great thing about aloe is that it’s highly resilient - and that’s another reason why it fits so naturally at Gobelo. Aloe is a succulent, which means it stores water in its leaves and tolerates dry conditions well. In places where rainfall can be unpredictable and soils are not always forgiving, that is a huge advantage. Aloe prefers well-drained soil and plenty of sunlight. Too much water can do more harm than good for an aloe plant. In fact, neglect can sometimes suit it better than overcare, which makes it perfect for anyone who wants something useful in the garden without constant maintenance.

Propagation is simple too. A mature plant produces small offshoots, often called “pups,” around its base which can be gently removed and replanted elsewhere. Harvesting aloe is also easy, but should be done carefully. Choose the outer, more mature leaves and cut them close to the base. Allow the yellow latex (the sap just beneath the skin) to drain before using the gel. The gel can be applied fresh, blended into simple skincare mixtures, or stored in the refrigerator for short periods.

Even though aloe vera may not produce fruit or fill a plate, it does support wellness. We have always said that every plant or animal we choose to grow at Gobelo must serve a purpose - and aloe serves many practical ones. It supports everyday health, which perfectly aligns with our greater purpose of growing things that make sense for our environment and contribute to the overall wellbeing of our community.

Until next time,
