New arrivals and old mischief

We can always count on something new happening at Gobelo! And this week, the excitement was at Gobelo Farm in Hwange with a new lamb joining the crew! Tiny, wobbly and bold, he is already following mum right into the middle of things… well, into a hay pile to be specific!

If you have visited Gobelo Farm you’ll remember that our sheep spend their days in open area pens, that are enclosed with wooden (log) fencing that has fairly large gaps between the logs. It turns out these gaps are just a bit too big to hold our tiny new explorer at the moment and he has already managed to squeeze between the gaps and wander off to the nearby duck pond. Seeing the farm team chasing after this tiny guy is a whole other experience.. He’s small but fast and they had quite a time trying to scoop him up and put him back with mum.

At the moment, Gobelo Farm in Hwange has eight sheep, each with a personality of their own. They spend most of their day grazing, lounging, or trying to break out into the veggie patch when no one’s looking. The ring leader (and papa pof them all) is named Putin. And if you remember, he’s the one we’ve always described as the master of the sheep pen. He’s a bit legendary and quite dramatic (with a constantly stern face), but once you get to know him, he’s undeniably charming and is often the first to nudge you as a hint that he wants a pat on the forehead (poll).. That said, he’s not above staging a standoff if someone happens to be in the way.

Our sheep were originally brought in to help us manage the pasture in a natural way. They’re not on the menu (for those who enjoy lamb). We just find them too adorable and we’re still exploring ways to productively raise these incredible farm animals. Like many things at Gobelo - what starts as curiosity often grows into something bigger. But for now our sheep are just part of the Gobelo family and provide an incredible learning opportunity, especially for our young visitors at the farm.

And so, we have a fresh voice this week with soft bleats coming from the farm, and we are all excited to watch this energetic new young one grow.
