Oregano a super herb for wellness

If you don’t know about it, oregano might look like just another herb or even a week on the garden edge. But don’t be fooled by its size. This little plant has been celebrated for centuries, both in the kitchen and in traditional medicine. Known for its strong, slightly peppery flavor, it is one of those herbs that quickly becomes a favorite once you have tried it fresh. What makes it even better is that behind its bold taste is a long list of health benefits that make it worth paying attention to. So of course it deserves a space in our garden as well.

Oregano is packed with antioxidants and is believed to have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. People have used it for soothing coughs, easing digestion, and even making herbal teas for general wellness. In the kitchen, it transforms the simplest dish. A sprinkle on roasted vegetables, a handful stirred into sauces, or even steeped into hot water for a refreshing tea… it’s a herb that works just as well in everyday meals as it does in traditional remedies.

One of the things we love about oregano is that it’s a perennial and quite resilient. Once it takes root, it keeps giving year after year. It grows best in warm, sunny climates and doesn’t ask for much beyond well-drained soil, the occasional watering and pruning (it can get quite unruly). At Gobelo, we have learned that while our soils and weather can be tough on some plants, oregano seems to adapt well once established. In fact, a little stress from the sun or dry soil tends to bring out an even stronger flavor in the leaves.

Harvesting oregano is simple. Pick the leaves in the morning after the dew has dried, when the oils are strongest. For preservation, you can dry the sprigs by hanging them upside down in a shaded, airy space, or freeze the fresh leaves in olive oil for quick use later. Drying concentrates the flavor for an even more potent flavour than when it’s fresh. Freezing keeps some of that green, fresh brightness. Either way, it’s the one herb you will be glad to have on hand when you need it.

Oregano might not be the first plant you think of when planning a garden, but it is one of the most rewarding. From flavoring food to supporting your health, it is a herb that more than pulls its weight. And for us at Gobelo, it has been a nice reminder that some of the most powerful things we can grow don’t take up much space but make a big difference in how we eat and how we live.

Until next time,
