Gobelo Farm recently hosted a rabbit training workshop! On 15 November, local villagers, aspiring farmers and small livestock keepers joined us, including two participants who travelled all the way from Victoria Falls. Everyone was eager to learn and excited to see what rabbit production looks like in practice.
The workshop focused on giving participants information they can use right away. Throughout the day, the farm team explained the basics of rabbit housing, feeding routines, breeding, disease prevention and simple record keeping. The session was open and informal, so the participants were able to ask questions and share what they were experiencing in their own communities as novice rabbit breeders. This made the lessons much more relatable for everyone and easy to understand.

As part of the training, the participants had a chance to tour the rabbit units and according to the feedback, seeing the cage setups, the bedding, the hygiene practices, the feeding systems and the cost-effective management methods, helped participants connect what they had heard with what they were seeing. Many said this part of the day helped to make everything real, especially for the one participant who was completely new to rabbit farming.

One of the highlights was the Q&A session during which the participants brought up their various challenges and the farm team offered clear and practical advice that could be applied back home. The discussion felt so lively with this small community of people sharing ideas and learning from each other just as much as they were learning from the Gobelo farm team. This is one of the reasons Gobelo continues to do this work. The goal has always been to keep experimenting, learning and sharing with the communities around us and those further away. Farm tours and workshops like this always bring new motivation and make us want to keep going and do so much more.
By the end of the day, on top of the knowledge the participants had just acquired, they also left with some plant cuttings to start their own grow spaces. Chaya, rosemary and oregano were among the plants they took home. They were instructed to plant and propagate so that in time, they’ll be able to use the plants as feed supplements for their rabbits and other livestock. A few timber boards were also shared for those who wanted to build their own rabbit nursing boxes using the methods demonstrated at the farm.

These types of workshops and other shared community activities just show how much can happen when people with a common goal come together to learn, to share, to grow...this was a good day for everyone involved and we look forward to welcoming even more aspiring farmers in the future.
Until next time,
the Gobelo Team
